PSHE and RSE

Cury School’s PSHE and RSE curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to navigate the complexities of life. By exploring key areas such as health, safety, wellbeing, relationships, and age-appropriate aspects of sex and relationships, pupils will develop the confidence and skills to make informed choices and become active members of society.

The curriculum aligns with the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance and the broader PSHE requirements of the National Curriculum. It promotes the four fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, respect, and tolerance.

While the curriculum does not explicitly address gender identity, it does explore the concept of identity more broadly throughout different year groups. Teachers and school leaders are encouraged to refer to school policies and procedures when considering how to address sensitive topics.

The curriculum also incorporates safeguarding elements, such as online safety and personal boundaries. By addressing these issues, the curriculum prepares pupils to make safe and informed choices.

The implementation of the PSHE and RSE curriculum at Cury School will involve a structured and progressive approach. Lessons will be delivered in a way that is engaging, relevant, and appropriate for the age and stage of the pupils.

The curriculum will be delivered through a variety of teaching methods, including:

  • Direct teaching: Explicit instruction on key concepts and skills.

  • Group work and discussions: Opportunities for pupils to share ideas and perspectives.

  • Role-play and simulations: Practical activities to develop empathy and understanding.

  • Case studies and real-life examples: To make learning relevant and meaningful.

The curriculum will be regularly reviewed and updated to ensure it remains relevant and effective. Teachers will receive ongoing professional development to support their delivery of the curriculum.

By following these strategies, Cury School aims to provide a high-quality PSHE and RSE education that will equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes they need to succeed in life.

Cury School's PSHE and RSE curriculum is designed to ensure that all pupils can access and progress in their learning. A range of teaching and learning activities, based on good practice, are used to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.

To establish a safe and positive classroom atmosphere, introductory lessons are conducted at the beginning of each year group to negotiate ground rules and expectations. These ground rules are revisited throughout the year to maintain a secure learning environment.

To cater to the diverse needs of all learners, lessons include differentiation strategies to challenge the most able and support those who require additional help. Real-life scenarios, stories, and video clips are used to engage pupils in current topics and issues in a safe and structured way. Role-play activities provide opportunities for pupils to practice social skills and problem-solving techniques.

The curriculum promotes cross-curricular learning, particularly with computing for online safety and Science for health and nutrition. Consistent messages about accessing help are reinforced throughout the age ranges.

The importance of parental involvement is recognised, and guidance is provided to support schools in working with parents and carers to enhance their children's learning.
